The compact SUV segment tends to be pretty basic and the 2024 Mazda CX-5 is the opposite of basic, so it really stands out among its peers. The new CX-5 looks and acts cool, handling hairpin curves like a sports car and offering a more luxurious experience than its competitors could ever hope to match. It’s easy to see why Car and Driver put the new CX-5 on the 2024 Editors’ Choice list.
Design
The luxury in this Mazda lineup is obvious as soon as you sit in one. The driver’s seat has six-way power directional control and manual lumbar support. Both front seats are heated with three levels of adjustment. Rear passengers have their own air conditioning vents and there are multiple convenient storage compartments.
You can tell that a lot of attention has been focused on detail in the attractive upscale cabin, and it’s an enjoyable place to spend time even on long road trips. However, the Mazda CX-5’s refinement extends beyond its physical features. Its polished behavior on the road, impressive standard technology, and advanced safety measures all add up to a superior package that’s hard to beat.
Performance
A 2.5-liter inline four-cylinder engine is standard on Mazda’s CX-5 base model. It’s paired with a snappy six-speed automatic transmission with a manual shift and Sport mode. Its throttle response is quick when zipping around town or pulling away from traffic lights. Tight cornering and precision steering make you want to take the CX-5 on a long drive with lots of curves. This line has really great dynamics. It rides like models costing twice as much.
There’s a minimum of road noise and gas mileage is excellent, 26 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway. Features like LED headlights with auto-leveling and Push Button Start are standard even on the lowest trims. The CX-5 can even tow up to 2,000 pounds.
Technology
The CX-5’s HD radio has a six-speaker audio system with an automatic level control. The infotainment system features an attractive 10.25-inch full-color display, Bluetooth, Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay. There are USB ports front and rear.
Uncommonly for this market segment, Pandora is integrated into the system. Phone controls are mounted on the steering wheel, plus there is audio delivery and reply for text messages. A three-year trial for Mazda Connected Services is included, as well.
Safety
The 2024 CX-5 has a perfect 5-star overall safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Mazda has also made advanced safety features standard from the lowest trim levels on up, such as:
- Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert
- Automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection
- Adaptive cruise control
- Lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist
